Real-time multiplayer exam prep with ELO matchmaking — AngelHack 2019 winner (AWS Amplify prize)
Prepto was a mobile app that made exam preparation social and competitive — like QuizUp but for students preparing for competitive exams. It won the AWS Amplify prize at AngelHack Delhi 2019.
The Idea
Indian students spend years preparing for competitive exams like JEE and NEET. This preparation is often lonely and grueling. We wanted to make it more engaging by turning practice into a game:
- Real-time Multiplayer: Challenge friends or strangers to quiz battles
- ELO-based Matchmaking: Get matched with players at your skill level
- Subject-specific Queues: Practice Physics, Chemistry, or Math against others focusing on the same topic
- Progress Tracking: See how you improve over time and where you need work
The Build
We built Prepto in 24 hours at AngelHack Delhi 2019.
Tech Stack
- React Native: Cross-platform mobile app for iOS and Android
- Firebase: Real-time database for multiplayer sync and matchmaking
- Cloud Functions: Server-side matchmaking logic and scoring
Features We Shipped
- Real-time 1v1 quiz battles with live score updates
- Question banks for JEE Physics, Chemistry, and Math
- ELO-based matchmaking that learns your skill level
- Leaderboards and achievements
Design
We also put significant effort into the UX and visual design. You can see the design system on Figma.

The Win
We won the AWS Amplify prize at AngelHack Delhi 2019 with a working demo and a compelling pitch about making education more engaging. The judges were impressed by the polish we achieved in 24 hours and the clear market opportunity.
Post-Hackathon
We continued development for a few months but eventually moved on to other projects. The core insight — that competitive, social learning is more engaging than solitary grinding — has since been validated by companies like Duolingo with their leagues and streaks.
Built with Angad Singh, Pulkit Garg, and Aravind Ashok.
